Confirm the profile is actually live

Log into business.google.com. A yellow banner across the top means suspended — nothing else will rank you until reinstatement. File a reinstatement request with a utility bill, business license, and 2–3 photos of your storefront or truck. Turnaround is typically 3–14 days.

Fix your primary category

Primary category outweighs every other on-profile signal. 'Plumber' beats 'Plumbing Service.' 'HVAC Contractor' beats 'Air Conditioning Contractor' in most markets. Test with a private-mode search and see which category the top three use.

Fresh reviews > review count

Google weights recency heavily. A competitor with 47 reviews (last one 4 days ago) will often outrank a business with 380 reviews (last one 8 months ago). Aim for 4–8 new reviews per month, minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my GBP reinstated after suspension?

File a reinstatement request from the profile dashboard with proof of address (utility bill), business license, and photos of signage/vehicles. Do not create a new profile — you will lose all reviews and rankings.

Why do I rank in one city but not the next town over?

Google Business Profile ranking is proximity-weighted. To rank in a neighboring city you need service-area coverage in your GBP, city-specific service pages on your site, and reviews mentioning that city by name.
