How to Write a Homepage That Converts (StoryBrand Framework)
By Chris Heidlebaugh · February 20, 2025
Most homepages fail because they commit the same sin: they make the business the hero. But your customer doesn't want a hero — they want a guide. Here's how the StoryBrand framework flips the script and turns your homepage into a conversion machine.
The StoryBrand Framework in 60 Seconds
Donald Miller's StoryBrand framework is built on a simple idea: every human being is the hero of their own story. When they land on your website, they're looking for a guide who understands their problem and has a plan to solve it.
The framework has seven elements:
- A character (your customer) who wants something.
- Has a problem — external, internal, and philosophical.
- Meets a guide — that's you.
- Who gives them a plan.
- And calls them to action.
- That helps them avoid failure.
- And ends in success.
Section 1: The Header (Above the Fold)
This is the most important real estate on your website. You have about 5 seconds. Your header needs three things:
- A headline that states what you offer in plain language
- A subheadline that describes the outcome or transformation
- A call-to-action button that's impossible to miss
Bad example: "Welcome to Smith & Associates — Excellence Since 1987"
Good example: "Get More Customers Without Wasting Money on Ads That Don't Work"
Section 2: The Problem
After the header, agitate the problem. Your customer needs to feel understood. Address three levels:
- External problem: "My website doesn't generate leads."
- Internal problem: "I feel frustrated and confused by marketing."
- Philosophical problem: "It shouldn't be this hard to grow a good business."
Section 3: The Guide (You)
Now — and only now — do you talk about yourself. But not in a "look how great we are" way. Show two things:
- Empathy: "We've worked with hundreds of service businesses who felt the same way."
- Authority: Testimonials, logos, results, certifications — proof you can deliver.
Section 4: The Plan
People don't buy what they don't understand. Give them a simple 3-step plan:
- Schedule a call
- Get a custom plan
- Watch your business grow
Three steps. Not seven. Not twelve. Three. This reduces anxiety and makes the next step feel easy.
Section 5: The Stakes
What happens if they don't act? Don't be dramatic, but be honest. "Without a clear marketing strategy, you'll keep spending money without knowing what's working — and your competitors who do have a strategy will keep pulling ahead."
Section 6: The Success
End by painting the picture of what life looks like after working with you. Confidence, clarity, growth, freedom — whatever transformation you deliver, make it vivid and specific.
Putting It All Together
Your homepage should flow like a story: hero (customer) → problem → guide (you) → plan → call to action → avoid failure → achieve success. Every section earns the right to the next scroll. Nothing exists without a purpose.
